Five golden rules for using recycled materials

Multi-material 3D printer manufacturer AIM3D is currently developing a larger particle 3D printer to be able to reproduce larger installation space and higher construction speed. The product launch is scheduled to be released on Formnext 2021 in Frankfurt.

The CEM-E2 extruder and its indenter match the material group. The indenter version is "M" (metal), and the extruder is specially designed for metal filler materials (MIM pellets). "P" (plastic) indenters are used for unfilled and filled plastics. The "C" (Ceramic) print head is specially developed for ceramic filler materials (CIM particles) with higher wear. The characteristic of the new extruder/print head is to improve the feeding accuracy. This makes the parts have higher surface quality and better mechanical properties. The extrusion speed can be increased by more than 200%, so now the 0.4mm nozzle can reach a construction speed of 220cm³/h.

CEM technology enables cross-material use of additive manufacturing systems. In addition, filaments can usually be omitted and traditional particles can be used, which provides a considerable cost advantage. However, if the particles can be used directly, it is also important to reduce the build time of the components.

The new CEM-E2 extruder has been used to develop components in the PPS GF 40 for Schaeffler. Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) from Celanese was used. In addition to good basic characteristics (such as high flame resistance), this type also provides a large number of adjusting screws to customize characteristics such as electrical conductivity, thermal expansion or friction behavior. The development partnership between AIM3D and Schaeffler sets the task of developing coolant distribution nozzles as 3D components. The CEM-E2 extruder can also print the same PPS, and in injection molding, PPS GF 40 is selected for 3D printing. Usually the alternative to 3D printing is PA6 30GF (polyamide), because glass fiber is not used as the 3D printed filament or powder of PPS. The material PPS has higher temperature characteristics, improved mechanical properties and potential for lighter weight. Another decisive factor is the extremely high media resistance, because PPS hardly absorbs any water.

These are the most important 3D printing materials
