Bioplastics manufacturer Danimer Scientific, based in Bainbridge, California, recently announced that Eagle Beverage Products, a private label specialty beverage product manufacturer based in Kent, Washington, will use Danimer’s proprietary Nodax PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) for fast food The shop (QSR) industry produces biodegradable straws.

After testing by researchers at the University of Georgia (UGA) and the UGA New Materials Institute, PHA is made from sustainable materials such as rapeseed oil to produce a proven biodegradable alternative to traditional petrochemical plastics. Danimer's Nodax PHA has seven TÜV AUSTRIA certifications and industrial and household compostability claims. It is biodegradable in anaerobic conditions, soil, freshwater and marine environments, and is 100% biobased. All Danimer Scientific biopolymers, including its Nodax PHA, are approved by the FDA for food contact.

Eagle Beverage’s QSR customers are expected to purchase these straws in early 2021. After launching straws, Eagle Beverage plans to explore and expand its product range to include compostable food containers and packaging. Stephen Croskrey, CEO of Danimer Scientific, noted that “PHA has become the material of choice for a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic without sacrificing reliability or quality.” Eagle Beverage has established strong relationships with some of the country’s largest fast food chains. So we look forward to working with them to provide biodegradable straws for the industry. "

Said Eagle Drink vpAisha Kabani. "Reducing the impact of plastic waste is a key issue nationwide, but consumers have limited ways to find environmentally friendly alternatives in fast food restaurants. By cooperating with Danimer Scientific to produce reliable biodegradable straws, we will provide restaurants with a cost-effective solution Program to provide their customers with innocent beverage enjoyment. Petrochemical straws will decompose into harmful microplastics, which will never be completely degraded, but these PHA straws will be completely degraded within a few months."
