Modern Mold & Tool has moved to a new location in its hometown of Pittsfield, Mass.

The injection molder has been in Pittsfield since 1950. In October, it moved into a larger building that had been acquired for $2.5 million by Toner Plastics, its parent firm in East Longmeadow, Mass.

All of Modern's equipment is now in place at the new site, which covers almost 67,000 square feet. The firm's 56 injection molding employees are working at the new site, where they'll soon be joined by 13 employees in its tooling division.

Toner purchased Modern in 2016. Modern also operates a plant in Ormond Beach, Fla. Officials said the firm plans to add employees in Pittsfield, where Toner already has invested $1 million on new equipment. Modern makes injection molded parts for the medical and industrial markets.

Modern previously occupied about 30,000 square feet spread across two buildings in Pittsfield. The new site had been used by Amaray, an injection molder acquired by Westfall Technik in 2018 that closed in 2020.

Toner was founded in 1989 as a custom profile extruder by the husband-and-wife team of Steven and Jean Graham. Steven Graham, now the CEO, formerly worked at Monsanto Co. in Springfield, Mass.

Toner started with one extrusion line making PVC products and now makes custom profiles including filament for 3D printers, plus products for medical, industrial, point of purchase, crafts and wire and cable customers.

In 2017, Toner moved seven injection presses from Streamline Plastics — a Bronx, N.Y.-based firm that Toner had acquired — to the modern site in Pittsfield.

Modern traces its roots to former General Electric Co. toolmaker Rodozio Pedrotti. The firm originally was located in a wood-frame barn and used a former chicken coop as an office.
